Ronald E. Shaw Over View Ron Shaw is the founder of Extrication.Com, a private company dedicated to providing the latest vehicle technology, safety information and basic through advanced extrication training to emergency responders worldwide. Extrication.Com clients include; police, fire, rescue, EMS and the Department of Defense. Responders have traveled from Australia, New Zealand, Guam, England, Mexico, Grand Bahamas and Alaska and Hawaii in the United States. Ron has worked with worked with the leading automobile and airbag manufacturers to provide a safer working environment for first responders at the scene of an automobile crash. One of the most prestigious considerations has been as a consultant for Toyota Motor Sales of US and Toyota Motor Company of Japan/Lexus compiling emergency response guidelines for hybrid vehicles. Ron has taught at leading facilities such as the Central Florida Emergency Services Institute, Orlando, FL, Firehouse Magazine’s Expo 2002, 2001 and 2000 at the Maryland Fire & Rescue Institute, Baltimore MD and Fairfax County Fire Department Academy. Ron has also published many safety articles for responders at the scene of a crash. Some articles have been published or accepted by Firehouse Magazine and Fire Engineering. Ron also contributed work for the NFPA’s textbook for FF I/II Fundamentals (extrication chapter) and is currently writing a new vehicle extrication textbook for Jones & Bartlett Publishers: Extrication.Com’s “Vehicle Extrication: Basic Skills” due to be released in 2006. Serving as a professional firefighter for the Plymouth MA Fire Department since 1977, with over twenty-nine years of experience of structural, woodland fire fighting, and rescue work. Ron started his firefighting career as a call firefighter until being promoted to permanent firefighter in 1977 and now a lieutenant serving as a line officer. Ron has never for gotten where he came from and particularly enjoys working with call and volunteer fire departments providing training to emergency responders worldwide. Experience Full-time July 1977 to Present: Permanent Fire Lieutenant, Plymouth Fire Department, Plymouth, MA Fire Alarm Operator, Aerial Truck Operator, Engine Operator, Brush Truck (Brush breaker) Operator, Tanker Operator and Rescue Truck operator. As a FAO of a six-station department, I was responsible for dispatching box assignments, all fire and medical emergencies. While in this position compiled a operators manual for use in conjunction with the fire alarm computer (IBM) for all personnel to use and provide trouble shooting for both the software and hardware. As a line firefighter, had responsible for operating the following types of equipment: Seagraves sixty five-foot aerial, the department's engines (pumper combinations) ranging from 500-1,250 GPM capacity, 1,500 gallon tanker, woods trucks/brush breakers, three different type models; all wheel drive armored trucks with a water capacity of 345-500 gallons and 1,500-gallon tanker for use in forest fires and rural water supply areas, all having a pump and roll capability. A medium duty rescue truck with forcible entry & extrication, HAZMAT, crash and rescue equipment. Also assigned to the rescue truck are two boats; an open water boat and an iceboat. While in the Naval Air Reserves, served as a second class petty officer, with the responsibilities of a reciprocating engine mechanic-2, second mechanic/observer on aircrew, and serving as a shop supervisor for VP-92 Line Operations. While detailed to the Naval Air Squadron; NARDIV, was attached to the NAS Transit Line, duties included "Crash & Recovery" with the assignment as crash crane operator. Duties include support the pilot with operation of aircraft, observe and spot fires and terrain with regard to wildfires and other activities as warranted. Duties include; communicate to local and state authorities while fire is in progress, advise position and direction to fire apparatus while on patrol during a fire activity. January 1975-1977, Office of Emergency Preparedness, Plymouth, MA, held the title of Deputy Director/Training Officer; job assignment was to assume the role as director of OEP for the town of Plymouth in the absence of the director. Train all sub-departments within the agency, teach CPR Basic Life Support to local residents, make monthly reports to the state agency and local government.
