Keeping Safe On-scene
There are two ways; through proper education, and using your agency's generic vehicle rescue field guides. There are three key elements of any vehicle rescue:
Putting the vehicle's transmission into the PARK position and shutting it down by utilizing the ignition key/button will greatly reduce many responder issues. For years responders taking our Extrication.Com training programs have asked about reference books that will identify potential hazards in automobiles; as well as showing pertinent responder information such as battery locations. There are several books available; however, they also include discrepancies. There are responders that have purchase these books, that may not be unaware of any discrepancies. Many of these are a distinct disadvantage to the responder. When a company sells a resource tool for use as a responder safety reference manual, the company should have a notification program after purchase for updates to correct errors, omissions or additions. However, this is not always the case. There is one software company based in Netherlands that has seemed to resolve responder concerns and the issue of updating its product for the end user. MODITECH has developed a computer based software program designed with the responder in mind. Under the trade name Crash Recovery System (CRS), responder can work off a laptop computer, enter the VIN number either manually or with an optional bar code scanner version, receive pertinent information about the vehicle. Such as SRS component locations, ROPS/RPS, hybrid system and all battery locations.
Hybrid vehicle myths are a concern to all emergency responders unfamiliar with the technology. Turning the ignition off, and disabling the low voltage system shuts down the hybrid system. Knowing where the low voltage auxiliary battery is important, the MODITECH CRS is one of the most advanced adjunct tools to assist responders at a crash, specifically addressing hybrid issues. Is it a necessary that agencies own a computer based program in order to perform vehicle rescue safely? No, but for the responder that doesn't have a familiarity with the latest vehicle innovations, this is an excellent resource tool. Before your department considers purchasing either the standard or VIN (bar code scanner) edition, take our free demo program for a test drive. You be the judge... Extrication.Com Extrication.Com is pleased to offer or recommend the following rescue products to our clients. New Innovation Tool for Vehicle Rescue
Over the years responders have improvised by fabricating make shift buttress plates (rocker channel/panel shoe) to use as a push point for a ram or spreaders. While fabricating specialty tool accessories can make vehicle rescue easier, there are liability issues that agencies need address. What happens when the device you fabricated slips out of place or fails and there is an injury to a responder or your patient? Buttress plates fabricated from channel iron do not fit properly on vehicle rocker channels. Poor design allows the base to ride up and slip out, when poorly engineered the product can fail at the welds or weaken under pressure extreme pressures from the tool. Virginia-Maryland Rescue Systems owner Ed Cutrell has sited how one responder using a homemade buttress plate kicked out and broke the responder's leg. There is now a commercially available tool that Extrication.Com recommends over the use of other non-securing and homemade buttress plates, its called the TarHEEL® engineered and manufactured by Virginia-Maryland Rescue Systems, Inc. Using a hydraulic hand operated pump the tool clamps on to the rocker channel of a vehicle and does not relay on a structural pillar. The device can be positioned at any point on the rocker channel to compensate the length of the heavy rescue tool (ram or spreaders) being used to extend the reach and use as your stable push point. The tool is generic enough that it can be used with all rams and spreaders. Extrication.Com has placed the TarHEEL® in our tool inventory and uses the device in our basic, intermediate and advanced programs for added safety during our practical sessions. One injury can more than pay for the cost of this specialty tool. Ron Shaw
