Program Offerings for 2006

The following are the current 2006 course selections being offered by Extrication.Com by extrication skill levels:

 Basic Extrication Skills

Prerequisite: None, no prior experience is necessary.  Any emergency responder (fire, police, EMS,  candidate in training or tow operator desiring to cross train) may attend. We will be using a special version of  Len Watson's basic skills manual expressly licensed to Extrication.Com. All student handouts are now copied on CDs.

  1. 8-hour "Vehicle Extrication: Basic Skills Review"
This program is approved for 8-hours EMT CEUs (basic-paramedic) by the MA OEMS.
The program is targeted for those responders who have had a formal basic skills training program and would like to attend a limited classroom session and sharpen their practical skills. Extrication.Com suggests all responders attend a basic review program each year between attending a more formal 16-hour program.
  2. 16-hour "Vehicle Extrication: Basic Skills"
This program has no prerequisite and is designed to exceed TERC and NFPA Fire Fighter II standards for vehicle extrication at the basic skills level. The Basic Skills program has been granted 16-hours EMT CEUs (basic-paramedic) by the MA OEMS. This program is intended for entry level responder as well as those that have not had a formal extrication program in three or more years.

    Intermediate Extrication Skills
Prerequisite: None, however it is suggested that attendees take the basic skills prior to attending. These programs start where the basic skills have left off. Technology has changed by leaps and bounds in the last decade that it is impossible to cover everything a responder needs to know in a 16-hour basic skills program. There will be new techniques that are taught in the 8-hour New Vehicle Technology practical session that are not covered in the basic skills program.

  3. 4-hour "Vehicle Extrication: New Vehicle Technology"
The NT program approved for 4-hours EMT CEUs (basic-paramedic) by the MA OEMS. This program starts where the basic skills programs leave off. Students will learn how to cope with new vehicle safety innovations to safely mitigate a vehicle rescue. The program was designed to present multiple NT programs in one day or to allow call and volunteer departments having evenings programs a condensed version of our 8-hour NT program. No pre-requisites, however it is suggested that attendees have a basic skills background.

             Advanced SRS training
             ROPS/RPS
             Crash Theory
             Innovative Vehicle Features
Electric, Hybrid (gas/diesel-electric) and Fuel Cell Vehicles
Alternative Extrication Techniques such as the Modified Dash Roll

The 4-hour New Vehicle Technology program does not include any hands-on session.

  4. 8-hours "Vehicle Extrication: New Vehicle Technology" (with hands-on) Intermediate Skills.
The 8-hour NT course is our most popular training program and has been
approved for 8-hours EMT CEUs (basic-paramedic) by the MA OEMS. This program will address new vehicle innovations, propulsion systems (pure electric, hybrid and fuel cell technology) passive/active safety systems and suggestions on how to cope with innovative vehicles to safely mitigate a modern vehicle rescue. This program is similar to the 4-hour program, except it normally will present 5-hours of classroom lecture with 3-hours of hand-on practical. Program structure is flexible to meet the demands of the host department. When included as an option by the host agency, a limited practical session will demonstrate how to perform Extrication.Com's Modified Dash Roll. This is the most radical change in extrication techniques since the seventies. It can be used to reduce dashboard entrapments from the average of 15-30 minutes to 4-6 minutes or less! The technique is now used by military Special Forces for rapid intervention as well as civilian emergency services for various applications.

    Advanced Extrication Skills

The heavy truck and bus programs are advanced extrication programs requiring students attend a formal 16-hour basic skills program prior to attending the program, without exception. Extrication.Com does not just cut the prop vehicles up, we structure the hands-on sessions around surrealistic crash evolutions that the students may encounter while on duty. Truck and bus prop vehicles will setup using passenger vehicles to make the most challenging evolutions with a higher degree of risk. For this reason Extrication.Com reserves the right to limit participants who in our opinion have not met the basic skills of extrication or elect to stop the program and review the necessary techniques before advancing into the more complex scenarios for safety and liability reasons. All advanced extrication programs been approved for their respective hours of EMT CEUs (basic-paramedic) by the MA OEMS.

  5. 8-hour "Advanced Vehicle Extrication: Heavy Truck"
Extrication.Com instructors will present a 2-hour classroom session explaining classifications, hazards and how to cope with big rig rescues. The 6-hour hands-on session will require the attendees to work more independently of the instructors and as teams often thinking "out of the box." The hands-on sessions are complex, often with vehicles in unusual positions when local resources and host agency allows. Must have attended a basic skills program within the last three years.
  6. 8-hour "Advanced Vehicle Extrication: School Bus"
While the course focuses on the four classifications of school buses, commercial and handicap buses will be discussed. Similar to the truck program, the bus hands-on session will be complex and demanding requiring the attendee's skills level to be beyond that of the basic responder. Must have attended a basic skills program within the last three years.
  7. "40-hour Basic through Advanced Extrication"
16-hours basic skills, 8-hour New Technology, 8-hours Heavy Truck and 8-hours bus extrication. This program is designed to allow the entry level and the more seasoned responder to work together starting with 16-hours of basic skills, 8-hours of intermediate skills and 16-hours of the most advanced skills we offer. Often we find that there is a vast difference in cognitive and enabling skills between other extrication program and one presented by Extrication.Com. This program brings all the responder together to work on an equal skills level in a systematic progression of training difficulties. Extrication.Com feels this allows the student to advance at an even pace and prevents freelancing. This program starts off with the basic skills and progress to the advanced skills required for the responders to mitigate a truck and bus rescue.  There is no pre-requisite for this program since the basic skills is taught prior to the more advanced modules for this program.
  8. 16-hour "Advanced Vehicle Extrication: Heavy Machinery"
We have extended the original program by (8) additional hours starting in 2006. Both farm and construction machinery will be included in classroom and practical sessions. Only available in Toronto, Canada and Olathe, Kansas USA as an open enrollment program at this time. The Heavy Machinery programs requires the students to have the greatest degree of skills and increased risks. Must have taken 16-hours basic skills, 8-hours heavy truck and 8-hours bus extrication or our 40-hour program prior to attending.
  9. 24-hour "Advanced Vehicle Extrication: Heavy Machinery Train the Trainer"
We have extended the original program by (8) additional hours starting in 2006.Only available in Toronto, Canada and Olathe, Kansas USA as an open enrollment program at this time. Must have taken the 16-hour heavy machinery program prior to attending and be a certified instructor with an expertise in extrication. Students will be given an "Instructor Packet" on CD ROM. It is suggested that attendees bring a laptop computer for the classroom sessions. There will be a multiple choice exam for validation purposes.
  10. Basic Skills "Train the Trainer"
All basic skills TTT programs have been delayed until the Extrication.Com textbook by Ron Shaw has been completed. At that time we will be using this as our student manual for all programs.

Basic Skills Vehicle Extrication Lesson Plan and Video Tapes/DVDs Rentals

Many departments are suffering from the constraints of budget cutbacks and can not afford to purchase an entire up to date vehicle extrication program that meets NFPA or TERC extrication recommendations. Beginning with training year 2005-2006 Extrication.Com will offer a complete classroom basic skills DVD or video tape rental program.

How it works
Your agency places a deposit for the cost of the lesson plan and video tapes or DVDs by credit card or other payment and we ship a total training packet to your department. You will have two weeks to prepare and present the program to your students, after you return the lesson plan and tapes or DVDs. Any damages to the lesson plan or video tapes/DVDs will be the responsibility of the agency renting the program. All training material is copyrighted and no permission is given for copying any part of the lesson plan or video tapes. The student manual is provided on a CD and licensed to Extrication.Com/host agency for a single use per program student reprint. The cost per program license for reprinting is $150 per master copy. Inquire about the cost of the rental program to Christine Healy, Sales Manager chealy@extrication.com or Ron Shaw rshaw@extrication.com.

Included the Rental Packet:

  1. Basic Skills Instructor Guide/Lesson Plan
  2. Unit Quizzes
  3. Final Exam
  4. Practical Evaluation Form
  5. AV training tapes or interactive DVDs
